Four community-minded young people were honoured for their extraordinary efforts in volunteer work during the Youth Unlimited Street Festival on Thursday night.
Connor Henezi, Austin Beveridge, Florence Liu and Hayley Lush each donate upwards of 40 hours a month to community organizations, businesses and individuals in Central Alberta. A total of nine people were nominated for the awards, which were split into four age groups, and while none of the nominees volunteer for the recognition, representatives from Central Alberta Youth Unlimited (CAYU) felt it was important to honour their achievements.
“We see the negative side of the community when it comes to young people as well, so when you have a young person who is blessing the community like crazy, you want to celebrate it because it’s inspirational,” explained CAYU Executive Director Jacob Schellenberg. “People say that this generation is entitled and all those kinds of things, but that isn’t necessarily the case. I think that is the few – there are a ton of young people out there ... that want to see this community become a better place.”
