Thank you for visiting the Gambia 2016 Project Serve Mission page
In July and August of 2016 a team of 12 from Canada will live and serve in The Gambia for a month.
The purpose of this mission is to offer encouragement and support to the people and projects of Youth For Christ – The Gambia. We will listen and learn, assisting with projects where they have asked for help. We will equip and empower local people who are in the best position to bring about sustainable positive change. The team will leave for the Gambia around July 15th and return in the middle of August.
How specifically are we going to help?
(1) YFC The Gambia owns a plot of land just outside the capitol of Banjul. Many young people in that country have had to leave school prematurely for a variety of reasons. As a result, illiteracy and unemployment rates are very high. This contributes to the poverty rate, youth pregnancy, and other negative social issues throughout the land. YFC The Gambia is committed to being part of the solution.
A previous team laid the foundation for a skills training school for youth, who have no other option for learning. The land is secure and the perimeter wall is up. Our task is to work with a team of local people to raise the first two classrooms. We will hire local people to assist us. This provides badly needed employment for a month in the short term, as we work together to build a centre that will provide long term solutions for the nation. Once these first two classrooms are up, they will begin to be used.
(2) On the outskirts of the capitol is a very depressed area called Wencher. This tiny community lives between the city dump (about 150 metres away) and a large walled compound that houses rice storage. They live on land that has been built up by decades of dumping oyster shells on the edge of the mangrove swamps. They gather oysters and sell them to pay for the children of the village to go to school. The people here are all but forgotten by everyone except YFC. YFC the Gambia is trying to encourage and assist the community in many ways. We will help them do this by providing relief supplies for families and spending time in the community, serving wherever we find a need. There are other communities we will serve in as well.
How will we get there?
Each team member is responsible for raising $3800.00. This will cover airfare, accommodations, food and travel while in The Gambia, and some much needed supplies for the projects. To put this in perspective, each team member is seeking (for example) 38 people who will donate $100 each. We ask you to take a moment to consider whatever support you are able to provide. Our goal is to have the majority of these funds in place by the end of March 2016, so that we can pursue the training, purchase plane tickets and cover all the costs of the mission. We look forward to keeping you updated on this amazing service opportunity.
Funds received by Youth For Christ Canada are the property of YFC Canada, and will be used for the purposes for which they were raised until the mission project is complete. In the event that I cannot go for some reason, the funds will still help the people of the Gambia. Excess funds, if any, will be used at the discretion of YFC Canada. Income tax receipts will be issued at the end of the year.
